Iranians (if not brutally repressed, a strong possibility) might seize democracy even as we surrender it.

Indeed. They were showing every sign of doing just that. Until Trump had a tantrum and got them all rallying around the flag. For the ayatollahs, as for a lot of other autocrats, Trump is the best thing that has happened to them in ages.
