It was when this song came on . . . MTV? Or was there already VH1? . . . that I knew something new was in the air, a.k.a. “the Eighties” had begun. Bouncy, clean-cut. And what did the T-shirts say? FRANKIE SAYS . . . No, apparently not.
That original video was like the whole culture had taken a shower and had a haircut for the first time in 15 years. We were ready to go-go on Wall Street!
My friend on Twitter, “Stephie from Texas”, is a big Wham fan, and when I sent her this cover from PostmodernJukebox she and her daughter bought it immediately!
And the ’80s were well-underway by that point. The ’80s probably really got underway with Reagan’s inauguration (it felt like things didn’t have to suck any more), and musically had been underway since 1977 or 1978. There isn’t a real clear dividing line there, unlike how the ’60s start when the Beatles showed up. I can’t help of thinking of the 1980s when I hear anything by The Cars, and their first album was released in 1978.
The best I can do for a musical separation is in 1980, when both Ace of Spades and Iron Maiden were released, the last of which really ushered in a new era of metal. But for pop music I don’t really think there is a definitive separation point. Unless maybe, just maybe, it’s Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall album (1979). But even that doesn’t seem right.
She has an innocent voice- clear and sweet.
Since my weekend is almost half gone- i plan on the next half to be warmer, i hope!! We still had hail on the ground this morning from last night’s storm, for crying out loud!
You have to admit, Ron- she reminds me of the 3rd runner up on Survivor this yr- Cass. She is pretty mellow. I loved Cass, btw- her smiley face in any situation reminded me of me- perma-grin :0D
i just have spent at least one hr watching these five amazingly gifted people singing their hearts out- they give and they take. The best. And, it’s ok by me if you think i’m daft in the head- i never said i had the best of taste in all things.

The 2014 version appears to have been shot on Xanax. The 1984 version appeared to have been shot on toothpaste.

Either way, I feel like I’ve been Rick-rolled.

Lol, post all the videos you like, Ron. Follow your bliss! But I’ve been rick-rolled so many times now that I’m click-shy.
