Survey Says…
Thought this 1939 Fortune magazine survey of public opinion was interesting. After looking at it, and some of the other survey questions and data also available at this webpage, there’s a lot that seems as familiar and debatable today as it was then.

It is interesting that, like the frog-in-boiling-water analogy, we have taken in stride the insidious creep of federal control in almost every aspect of our lives including many that are not on the chart.. In my lifetime I have seen the steep erosion of state and local government powers granted by the constitution as the feds exert increasing control.

The second and third rows have moved way to the left, i.e., to the right.

I agree that public opinion has shifted to the right [left on the chart] on these issues. But when it comes to providing jobs, the feds have certainly done their share with more than two million civilian employees. And let’s not forget how many upper-level executives were saved from poverty by those timely government bail-outs.
