What begins as a trickle effectively destroys a town in less than seven minutes:

A Google street view of the area before the tsunami can be seen here.

Amazing, isn’t it? I don’t know about you, but whenever I’ve thought about a tsunami, I thought “Giant wave-all over in seconds.” Powerful video – all the more so because whoever took it had the courage to do so and remain silent while doing it.

Yes — it’s pure witnessing. Reminds me of the last line of Moby-Dick — “I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

The power of megatons of water moving fast is about the scariest thing I can imagine. Most people don’t realize just what it can do. Amazing video! My heart goes out to the people of Japan. What a tragedy!

I also have to consider the fact that we in the Puget Sound area of the NW will also most certainly face such a catastrophe in the not-too-distant future. There’s no real way to prepare for it. Those nuclear plants in Japan were considered ‘earthquake proof’. I don’t think much can withstand a magnitude 9 quake.
