What flashes through my mind for some reason is the “sensory” and “motor homunculi” — those distorted pictures of the human body based on how much brain territory each body part uses. Lips and thumb are huge. I’m thinking of a “scare homunculus” where the representation of a particular phenomenon in the media (the collective brain?) is grotesquely disproportionate to its actual dimensions.

Wow! It’s worse than leprosy. I didn’t realize leprosy was at pandemic proportions. That was helpful and excellent in its perspective-lending.
