Half Full

Friends who haven’t seen us for a long time are very aware of how much of himself J has lost.  I’m more aware of how much he has retained.

That is an interesting perspective, possibly the only one that you can have.

If I were to meet J for the first time today, which would I notice? Would my perception be slanted toward what he can’t do or what he can? That would reveal a lot more about me than about J.

If you met J for the first time you would definitely notice the substantial remnants of his large personality. His presence would overwhelm his disability. He’s confused but still grand and generous. He’d tell you “Your enemies are my enemies,” or something along those lines. And even though he can’t get out of his wheelchair you would feel protected.

I’ve noticed, in talking to him over the phone, that he has a harder time coming up with basic words. I still feel like he knows who I am, and he seems frustrated at not being able to express himself. He never loved the phone, anyway.
